What the Ultimate Explorer adds over the standard ticket
Both Leeds Castle tiers open the same estate: the castle building, 500 acres of parkland
and gardens, the maze and its underground grotto, the Bird of Prey Centre and its falconry
displays, the Dog Collar Museum and two adventure playgrounds.
The Ultimate adds two paid extras and turns them into inclusions — six trips on
Elsie the Castle Train or the Black Swan Ferry, and one round of adventure golf. On an

There is one exclusion worth stating plainly: evening and special ticketed events sit
outside every admission ticket. The Christmas light trail, the fireworks and the masquerade
balls are sold on their own, and the events page carries the dates.
Three to five hours, and how to spend them
The listing quotes three to five hours, and that is honest. Here is what the range
actually looks like on the ground.
Three hours. The castle building, the courtyard and one garden, with
time to sit down once.
Four hours. Adds the maze and the grotto and a falconry display, which
is the pair most visitors remember.
Five hours. Adds the far end of the Great Water, the Dog Collar Museum
and either the playgrounds or a round of golf.
Two visits. The ticket runs for twelve months, so the gardens in May
and the light trail in December are the same fare.
Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book it if
Leeds Castle is the destination rather than one stop of three, and you are driving or
taking the train. It is the cheapest fare of any Leeds Castle ticket prices comparison you can
run, parking is included, and nothing about your day is on a coach timetable.
Choose something else if
You are in London without a car and want Canterbury Cathedral and the White Cliffs in the
same day. Adding a return train and two taxis to this fare lands you close to

Arriving at the castle under your own steam
The castle is seven miles east of Maidstone at Junction 8 of the M20, about an hour from
London. Use ME17 1RG in a sat nav; the postal ME17 1PL is a different place
and will send you astray. Parking is included in the ticket, and the walk in from the car
park is longer than most people expect — the free mobility bus runs from near the
ticket office if you need it.
By rail, Southeastern runs direct to Bearsted in 70 to 75 minutes from London Victoria,
then a five-minute taxi or a 30 to 40 minute walk. Show that train ticket on arrival and the
castle takes 20% off admission, which is the single best-value move available here. The

Know before you go
The ticket is valid for twelve months. Treat a rained-off afternoon as
the first half of a year rather than a wasted fare.
The building closes before the grounds. From October it shuts at
3:30pm with last entry at 3pm, so come in the morning.
No pushchairs inside the castle. A buggy park sits at the door; the
Castle View Restaurant is the same.
Assistance dogs only. Wildfowl roam the moat and the Great Water, so
nothing else on four legs is admitted.
The maze exit is 36 steps. Reaching the centre commits you to going
down through the grotto and back up.
Bring a picnic if you want one. Barbecues are banned across the estate,
and there is a beach with an ice cream parlour to sit beside.

The gardens at Leeds Castle were full of ponds, little bridges and grass to sit on, with plenty of places to spread a picnic. We did the train, the boats and the mini golf, and caught a falconry display as well. Tea and ice cream in a café finished it off.

The grounds are lovely and the 1920s restoration inside Leeds Castle is genuinely interesting. There is a great deal for children and the play areas were busy. We were not given a wristband on the way in, which caused confusion when we tried to get into the castle itself.
Yes. Leeds Castle states that admission tickets are valid for multiple use for one year from the day you select when booking. Two visits on one adult ticket works out cheaper per visit than a single standard Explorer ticket.

Does the price include getting there?
No. This is admission only, so the journey to Maidstone is yours to arrange. If you would rather somebody else drove, the coach day from Victoria includes castle entry, a guide and two more landmarks.
Do I need to choose a time slot?
There is no timed entry at Leeds Castle. Once you hold a ticket you can arrive at any point before last entry, which is 4pm for the grounds in summer and 3pm from October.
Is the estate wheelchair accessible?
