Leeds Castle Weather Month by Month
The castle building is about an hour of a Leeds Castle day. The rest is 500 acres of open parkland, a maze, three playgrounds and a falconry ground, so the month you pick changes the visit more than it changes the comfort.
What the weather does to a day at Leeds Castle
Three things move with the season, and none of them is the temperature. Opening hours run in three published bands, so a January afternoon gives you two and a half hours of grounds and a July one gives six. The castle train and the Black Swan Ferry are seasonal, and so are the falconry displays and the obstacle course. And one coach day — the Golden Tours run — drops both its mead tasting and its Thames boat leg between November and March.
The fourth thing is the ticket. Because admission is valid for twelve months, picking the wrong month costs you nothing permanent: a wet February visit and a dry June one are the same fare. That is the argument for coming in winter and again in summer rather than waiting for the right forecast.
Leeds Castle month by month
January
Coldest month, and the shortest opening of the year until the 3rd. Highs average 8°C with rain on twelve days in the month. The grounds shut at 3:30pm once the Christmas programme ends, and the castle with them. Come for the building and the Dog Collar Museum rather than the gardens, and take the ticket's twelve months as an invitation back.
February
Barely warmer than January at 8.5°C, but noticeably brighter — sunshine jumps from 59 hours to 77. Rain falls on ten days, the fewest so far. Winter hours still apply until the season turns on 1 April. A good month for a first visit that you intend to repeat on the same ticket in May.
March
The turn. Highs reach 11°C, sunshine passes 120 hours and rainfall drops to 43mm, the second driest month of the year. The Eleanor of Castile exhibition opens on the 9th. Opening is still the winter band until the end of the month, so plan around a 3pm last entry rather than a 4pm one.
April
Everything changes on the 1st: the grounds open until 6pm, the castle until 5pm, and last entry moves to 4pm. Sunshine climbs to 181 hours and highs to 14°C. The mead tasting and the Thames boat leg return to the Golden Tours day. This is the first month the whole estate is genuinely walkable in a single visit.
May
Highs of 17°C, 216 hours of sunshine and rain on eight days. The Culpeper Garden and the Lady Baillie terraces are at their best, and the long evenings mean a coach arriving at eleven still leaves time to reach the maze. Half term brings families, so the playgrounds and the adventure golf are busy.
June
Twenty degrees, 220 hours of sunshine and the driest stretch of the year beginning. Falconry displays run reliably and the Black Swan Ferry is in service. Long daylight makes this the best month for the 500 acres rather than the building. Book the coach days ahead: June through August is when they sell out.
July
Warmest and sunniest — 22.8°C, 227 hours of sun and only 42mm of rain across seven wet days. The concert on the 11th closes the castle building for the day while the grounds stay open. If you want the interior, avoid that date; if you want the parkland, it is the best weather of the year.
August
Effectively as warm as July at 22.6°C, with slightly more rain at 55mm. The Sculpture Trail opens on the 29th and runs into October. Shade is limited on the open lawns, so the Wood Garden and the castle interior are the cool parts of a hot day. Summer opening runs to the end of September.
September
Highs of 19.5°C and 161 hours of sunshine, with the summer opening band still in force until the 30th. Rain falls on eight days. Crowds thin once schools return, which makes the first half of the month the quietest good weather of the year. The Sculpture Trail is still out.
October
Autumn hours start on the 1st: grounds to 5pm, castle to 3:30pm, last entry 3pm. Rainfall jumps to 73mm on eleven wet days. Halloween runs from the 17th and the parkland colour is the reason photographers come. Arrive by eleven or the castle building will close before you reach it.
November
The wettest month at 75mm across twelve days, and the shortest sunshine outside midwinter. The Fireworks Spectacular on the 7th and 8th closes the castle building for both days. Winter opening begins on the 20th with the Christmas lights, and last entry settles at 3pm. Dress for open ground after dark.
December
Highs of 8.5°C and 57 hours of sunshine, the least of any month. Christmas Day is the one day the castle and grounds close completely. The illuminated trail runs every evening from the 20th of November, and the masquerade balls and the murder-mystery dinner fall this month. Winter hours mean the daytime visit is short and the evening one is the point.
The seasons, and which one you want
Spring, March to May. Rainfall is at its lowest, sunshine climbs fast, and the long opening band starts on 1 April. The gardens are the reason to come.
Summer, June to August. The warmest and driest run, 213 to 227 hours of sunshine a month, and the full estate open until six. It is also the busiest, and the month the coaches fill.
Autumn, September to November. September keeps summer hours with fewer people, which is the best combination of the year. October brings the colour and the shorter hours together; November is the wettest month and the one with two closure days.
Winter, December to February. Short days, a 3pm last entry and the Christmas lights after dark. The building and the museums carry the visit rather than the grounds.
Best time of day
Arrive at opening. The coaches from London reach the castle late morning, so 10am to 11am is the quietest hour inside the building on any day between April and October. If you are driving, that is also when the car park is nearest the gate.
From October the calculation inverts. Last entry to the castle building is 3pm and the grounds close at 3:30pm from 20 November, so an early lunch and a 12:30 arrival leaves too little. A Leeds Castle day trip from London solves the timing for you; arriving under your own steam means owning it.
