Visiting Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle runs three sets of opening hours across the year, closes the building earlier than the grounds, and lets you back in free for twelve months on the same ticket. Get those three facts straight and the rest of the day plans itself.

Opening times — the three seasons Leeds Castle runs

There is no single answer to "what time does it open". The grounds and the castle building keep different hours, and both change three times a year. These are the 2026 bands as the castle publishes them.

The gap between the two matters in October. The grounds are open until five, but the castle itself shuts at half past three, so an afternoon arrival gets the parkland and not the rooms. If a Leeds Castle guided tour is bringing you, that decision is already made for you — the coaches arrive late morning.

Last entry, and why it is earlier than closing

Last entry to the grounds is 4pm from April to September and 3pm from October onwards. The castle building takes its last visitors at 4:30pm in summer and 3pm the rest of the year. Turn up after that and the gate will turn you away.

Here is the part that softens it: your ticket is valid for twelve months from the date you selected, so a wasted arrival is a rescheduled visit rather than a lost fare. That is the castle's own rule, not a concession you have to argue for.

Parking, and what the ticket already covers

Parking is included in the cost of admission. There is no barrier fee and no separate car park ticket — you pay once, at the point you buy entry.

Put ME17 1RG into the sat nav, not the postal ME17 1PL. The two are different places, and the postal code is the one printed on letterheads rather than the one that brings you to the visitor entrance. From London it is Junction 8 of the M20, seven miles east of Maidstone, and about an hour's drive; the Dartford Crossing is thirty minutes away. How long to allow — four honest plans

The estate covers 500 acres and the castle building is roughly an hour of it. That mismatch is behind almost every disappointed review: people arrive expecting a house and find a day out.

• Ninety minutes. What a coach day gives you. The building, the nearest gardens, and a brisk walk back. Enough, if the castle is one stop of three.
• Half a day. Adds the maze and the grotto, one falconry display and the Culpeper Garden.
• A full day. Adds the playgrounds, the adventure golf, the far end of the Great Water and time to sit down twice.
• Two visits. The ticket runs a year. Gardens in May, lights in December, one fare.

What you can bring in, and what you cannot

Most of the surprises at the gate come from this list, and every item on it is the castle's published rule rather than a guess.

• Picnics: yes. There is a sandy beach with an ice cream parlour to eat one beside, and grass almost everywhere else.
• Barbecues: no, disposable ones included, anywhere on the estate.
• Dogs: assistance dogs only. Wildfowl wander loose across the moat and the Great Water, so nothing else on four legs comes in.
• Pushchairs: in the grounds, not in the building. A buggy park sits at the castle door, and the Castle View Restaurant is the same.
• Scooters, bikes and wheel-based toys: no. Toddlers' Smart Trikes are the single exception.
• Drones: not without permission.

Eating on the estate

There are cafés and a restaurant on site, and the Boathouse Café at the water's edge has the accessible toilet with adult changing facilities. Nothing here is included in a ticket, and nothing on a guided day is either — every coach in this list excludes food and drink, so lunch is yours whichever way you arrive.

The practical answer for a family is a picnic. The practical answer for a coach day is that Canterbury, not the castle, is usually the lunch stop, and reviewers of the Golden Tours day are consistent that an extra twenty minutes there would help.

The days the castle building shuts

The castle and grounds close on Christmas Day. The building alone closes for the Fireworks Spectacular on 7 and 8 November 2026 and for the July concert, while the grounds stay open around it. If the interior is your reason for coming, check the date on the events page before you travel.

Booking before you travel

No timeslot is needed once you hold a ticket, and tickets cannot be bought over the phone. Online is cheaper than the gate on every band, and arriving by train, bus or bike with a valid ticket for that date takes another 20% off.
