Buying a ticket, and the rule almost nobody knows

Leeds Castle sells two tiers. The Explorer opens the castle building, the grounds, the maze and grotto, the gardens, the playgrounds and the Bird of Prey Centre. The Ultimate Explorer adds six trips on the castle train or the Black Swan Ferry and one round of adventure golf, for £11 more.

The rule worth knowing is the validity. Every admission ticket is good for multiple use for one year from the day you select. Two visits on one adult Ultimate Explorer works out at £22.75 each, less than a single standard Explorer. Nobody mentions it at the gate, and two travellers who bought through a reseller in 2022 believed it did not apply to them; the castle's own terms say it does.

Buying online is cheaper than buying at the gate on every band — £4.00 on an adult ticket, £13.50 on a two-adult family Explorer. Tickets cannot be bought over the phone. Every band, at both tiers, is on Leeds Castle ticket prices.

Getting there: the postcode that works and the one that does not

Two postcodes are attached to Leeds Castle and they are not the same place. The postal address is ME17 1PL. The one to type into a sat nav is ME17 1RG, which is the visitor entrance. Get that wrong and the last mile is farm lanes.

By road it is Junction 8 of the M20, seven miles east of Maidstone, about an hour from London and thirty minutes from the Dartford Crossing. Brown tourist signs pick the route up from the junction, and parking is inside the admission price.

By rail, Southeastern runs direct services to Bearsted (70–75 minutes from London Victoria) and Hollingbourne, with Ashford International 25 to 30 minutes away. From either station it is a five-minute taxi or a 30 to 40 minute walk. The Stagecoach 510 comes into the grounds on Saturdays and stops twelve minutes' walk away on other days. How long the estate actually takes

This is where most disappointment comes from. The castle building is roughly an hour. The estate around it runs to 500 acres, and the maze, the falconry ground and the playgrounds are a walk from the house rather than beside it.

• 90 minutes — the building and the nearest gardens. What a coach day gives you.
• Half a day — adds the maze, the grotto and a falconry display.
• A full day — adds the playgrounds, the golf and the far end of the Great Water.
• Two visits — the honest answer, and the ticket already allows it.

What you cannot bring through the gate

Four rules catch people out, and all four are published. Dogs are not admitted at all except assistance dogs, because wildfowl roam free across the moat and the Great Water. Pushchairs go in the grounds but not inside the castle building or the Castle View Restaurant, where a buggy park is provided. Scooters, bikes and wheel-based toys are refused throughout, with toddlers' Smart Trikes the single exception. Barbecues are banned everywhere on the estate, disposable ones included.

Picnics, on the other hand, are welcome, and there is a sandy beach with an ice cream parlour to eat one beside.

Whether to take a tour at all

The honest answer depends on one question: is Leeds Castle the day, or one stop in it?

If the castle is the day, buy the ticket and make your own way. You get the whole estate, you keep your own timings, and the fare is less than half any guided day from London. A Leeds Castle guided tour will always be cheaper per landmark and never cheaper per hour at the castle.

If you have one day for Kent, the coaches win outright. A ten-hour day from Victoria includes castle admission, a guide, Canterbury Cathedral as an optional grade and a stop below the White Cliffs of Dover, for around the cost of the ticket plus a return train and two taxis. The trade is time: ninety minutes at the castle rather than as long as you like.

Best time to come

April to September is when the whole estate is open until six and the ferry, the castle train and the falconry displays are all running. September is the pick: summer hours with the schools back. October brings the colour and a 3pm last entry together. From 20 November the light trail runs after dark and the daytime visit shortens to three and a half hours. Within a day, arrive at opening. The coaches from London reach the castle late morning, so the first hour inside the building is the quietest one you will get.

What is worth your time once you are in

The castle building holds 1930s interiors rather than medieval ones — the work of Olive, Lady Baillie, the last private owner. The Gloriette on the smaller island is the medieval survivor.
